Creating supplemental signage for a live organ concert

2022

This design functioned as an informational sign during an organist's live series of performances in Olympia, WA. The main goal of this project was to supplement the performances with some contextual information that the audience could follow.

In addition to the concerto outline, I also chose to provide quotes from Bach’s former student, Johann Adolf Scheibe, who offers some theoretical insight on the structural properties of the concerto. We also decided to give some select recordings (for people who wanted to listen to these works again) and arrangements (because we knew organists were attending).

I wanted to convey the strict sense of baroque order with the type layout while maintaining an inviting tone with the soft background variations. I chose to use Century Old Style Standard for the bold and pronounced title, which was proportioned to grab attention. For the subtitles, I used Chomsky to echo the Fraktur type prevalent in Bach’s era, and I went with the clean and orderly Neue Haas Unica for the legibility of the small type.
